How to reset DiskStation

Overview

Every Synology NAS server comes with a RESET button. You can reset administrator’s password, network settings, or reinstall the operating system with the RESET button. This article will guide you through the steps required.

1. Before You Start

Before you start to reset, make sure the DiskStation is in ready status.
You can launch Synology Assistant to locate your server and make sure it is Ready on the status column.

Note: You won’t lose any data during reset. In case of any accidental data loss, it's strongly recommended you back up your data before performing the operating system installation.

2. Reset the administrator’s password and network settings

This section will guide you through the steps required to reset the administrator’s password and network settings. After resetting your DiskStation, your system configuration will result in:

  • Admin password will be blank.
  • Guest account will be disabled.
  • DHCP will be enabled on IP, DNS, Gateway and other network interfaces.
  • JumboFrames will be disabled, and MTU will be set at 1500.
  • Reset Management Port to 5000/5001.
  • Reset PPPoE to be default.
  • IP auto-block will be disabled. The blocked IP address will not be erased.
  • Link Aggregation will be disabled.
  • Firewall rules will be disabled. The rules will not be erased.
Note: The RESET performs various functions on different versions of DSM. Please refer to here for DSM 2.2-0941 and downward.

Procedure

  1. Locate RESET button which is located at the back panel of the DiskStation.
  2. Note: If you have difficulty to locate the RESET button, please refer to the Quick Installation Guide which can be downloaded here.
  3. Using a paper clip, gently depress and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until the DiskStation emits a beep sound. Release immediately.
  4. Warning: Pressing the RESET button continuously will cause the operating system to reinstall.
  5. Launch Synology Assistant and login the DiskStation by using “admin” as the user name and leave the password column blank.
  6. Note: This procedure is only applicable when an OS was installed. If there is no OS, nothing will happen; however, the system will still beep.

3. Reset to reinstall the operating system

This section will guide you through the steps required to reinstall the operating system.

Procedure

  1. Locate RESET button which is located at the back panel of the DiskStation.
  2. Note: If you have difficulty to locate the RESET button, please refer to the Quick Installation Guide which can be downloaded here.
  3. Using a paper clip, gently depress and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until the DiskStation emits a beep sound.
  4. Within the next 10 seconds, press and hold down the RESET button again for about 4 seconds until the DiskStation emits beep sound.
  5. You will see the STATUS light on the DiskStation’s front panel now in orange and blinks.
  6. Run Synology Assistant and detect the DiskStation. You will see Configuration Lost on the Status column.
  7. Double click the DiskStation to launch the Setup Wizard and reinstall the operating system. You can also follow the installation instructions in the Quick Installation Guide or that came with your installation disc to set up the DiskStation.
  8. Note: It is recommended that you download the latest DSM version on Download Center.
